Anyone owning an XBox 360 should be aware that updates can turn your console into a door stop!
I purchased my 360 in May it only comes with a 90 day warranty. Well the gambler in me said "you've had your current computer 3 years without a problem don't worry". So I didn't get the extended warranty.
A month ago I put a new game disc in and the welcome screen comes up, a pop up says I needed an update to play this game. I download the update and resume but the picture starts pixelating and finally freezes. I shut it down wait a couple of minutes reboot and everything is fine for a couple of minutes then the same thing happens. So this time I go to the solutions outlined by Micr$oft for this problem (pull the hard drive, unplug the power. etc.) I boot up and get the three red lights of death, ouch!
I finally got some love by leaving the hard drive off and putting in an old game I'd played before, success!
Now we come to yesterday, I rent a new game (Battlefield 2) last night I put it in to play and a pop up tells me I need an update, uh-oh.
The gambler says go ahead and update, last time was just a fluke. So I did. I now own a door stop that flashes three red lights at me when I turn it on (just in time for Christmas, how thoughtful of Mr. Gates). No fixing this time.
Micro$oft says they'll "extend their hand" and only charge me $104 to fix it. I told them their update was the reason I owned a blinking brick now. They said we're sorry but we're a huge company and couldn't care less about you or your petty problems (insert demonic laugh).
I said I'll see you in court. Currently there is a suit under way by a guy named Kevin Ray over this issue of updates "bricking" your console.

So just be warned that next update may be the last you'll ever need for your XBox.

Is your console connected to the internet?

When it says, in order to play the game you need to update, I figure they mean what they say.
The problem as I see it is they are trying to do firmware upgrades over the internet, not a good idea.
I have a cable connection and even it's not perfect all the time. Firmware upgrades are very touchy, for say an upgrade for my DVD burner I usually download the file to my computer and then install it.

I dont even update my PC regularly out of fear of patches and fixes.
Really? Man I wouldn't go on the internet tubes without my updates and patches.
I did, once, after reinstalling Windows and my 'puter was hosed within 5 minutes.

Who says it doesn't pay to bitch and moan?
Microsoft extends Xbox warranty:

Microsoft Corp. is extending its warranty on the Xbox 360 video game console to one year from the previous limit of 90 days. The change announced Friday applies to future and present owners.
The move matches the one-year warranty that Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. already offer on their latest video game consoles, the PlayStation 3 and the Wii.
This autumn, Microsoft acknowledged that a glitch in the Xbox's online update system damaged a small number of customers' consoles before the problem was quickly fixed. At least one customer has sued over the incident. But Microsoft spokeswoman Molly O'Donnell said the new warranty was not a response to that case or any other repair claims.
Customers who already have paid repair bills on Xbox consoles that they've owned for less than one year will automatically get refunds, Microsoft said.
Microsoft shares fell 34 cents, or 1.13 percent, to close at $29.64 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

buy new one and switch out the hard drive with the old one and return it. unethical I know, but no more so than a company selling a piece of shit that breaks down too easily.
